On Friday night, we said goodbye to Boston and headed toward the South Shore of Massachusetts. We visited Pat's family in Marshfield, MA, which is a small pretty town with beautiful beaches. The next morning we packed up and drove to Cape Cod to check out Oysterfest in Wellfleet.
Cape Cod is technically a peninsula, not an island. It is naturally surrounded by water on 3 sides (think of your finger sticking out from your fist). However, about 100 years ago men built the Cape Cod canal, so now the Cape is basically a man-made island, because it's surrounded by water on all sides. The canal provides a shortcut for boats. Instead of going all the way around the Cape, boats can use the canal to cut across.
The cooler nights in Massachusetts have led to great fall foliage and made for a beautiful drive.
